on 02-12-2017 12:47

Owen Pick began his para snowboard cross season in style with a bronze in the opening World Cup of the winter.

The Brit slid his way into the small final at the Polar Madness event in Pyha, Finland, defeating Japan’s Gurimu Narita and grabbing himself bronze in the process.

Finland’s Matti Suur-Hamari won gold on home slopes, with America’s Evan Strong taking silver in the lower limb 2 impairment 1 category.

Suur-Hamari got the better of Pick in the semi-finals, after the Brit had eased past America’s Michael Shea in the quarter-finals and Japan’s Takahito Ichikawa in the first round proper.

Earlier, Pick had qualified third fastest with a time of 51.41 seconds, behind only Strong and Suur-Hamari.

Also in action in Pyha was James Barnes-Miller, with the Brit qualifying fifth fastest in the upper limb impairment 1 event.

Barnes-Miller went on to beat Italy’s Paolo Priolo in the first round, before losing out to Maxime Montaggioni of France in the quarter-finals.

The competition continues on Saturday with impairment 2 categories getting their turn on the slopes in Finland.
