Double Paralympic medallist Zoe Newson matched her achievements of the last two Games with a bronze medal at the World Para Powerlifting Championships, in Mexico.

The 25-year-old, competing in the -45kg category, finished third in Group A, giving her the bronze medal overall.

Newson ended with a best lift of 97kg, just 1kg ahead of fourth placed Ni Nengah Widiasih, with China’s Guo Lingling taking gold with a best effort of 110kg.

Turkey’s Nazmiye Muratli took the silver on 107kg, as five lifters broke the 90kg mark.

Newson failed on her first try at 97kg before making it at the second attempt, but could not get succeed with 98kg, giving her two unsuccessful lifts and a final score of 97kg – a performance she was not entirely satisfied with.

She Tweeted: “Came 3rd with a lift of 97kgs at the World Championship. Wasn’t my best performance today but happy to come away with a medal. Thank you everyone for your support.”

The action continues today in Mexico with Olivia Broome going in the -50kg category and Nathaniel Wilding and Ross John Austen in the -80kg.
