McGuire and Brits impress on opening day of boccia European Championships
Two-time Paralympian Stephen McGuire helped the BC4 team to a hat-trick of wins on an impressive opening day for the Brits at the boccia European Championships.
Saturday saw the start of the pairs and team competitions in Povoa de Varzim, Portugal , with 2016 individual world champion McGuire competing in the BC4 pairs competition alongside Evie Edwards and Louis Sanders.
The team got off to a victorious start, defeating Croatia 3-2 while it would get even better in their second encounter, as they crushed Greece 15-0 in a high-scoring affair.
That would then be followed by a much closer 5-2 win over Germany with a score of three from the final end securing the win and leaving them well placed ahead of Sunday’s elimination rounds.
There was also an unbeaten day for double Paralympic champion and current world number one David Smith and his BC1/BC2 teammates Claire Taggart and Will Hipwell.
The Brits were in action twice on Saturday, securing a dramatic 6-4 win over Italy thanks to three points in the final end.
And they carried on this momentum to secure a 9-3 win over Israel in the second match of the day, with six points in the first end setting them on their way.
In the BC3 Pairs, Patrick Wilson, Jamie McCowan and Scott McCowan got off to a similarly impressive start with an excellent 4-2 triumph over Denmark.
However, there was a 4-1 defeat to France in their second match with their opponents coming strong towards the end.
Sunday sees the culmination of the pool stages before the medals are decided with the elimination matches.
