GB’s Micky Yule wins World Cup bronze

on 03-03-2017 14:00

British Weight Lifting’s Micky Yule returned to international competition this week to win bronze at the Fazza 2017 World Para Powerlifting World Cup in Dubai, lifting 185kg.

It was the first major competition for Yule since finishing in sixth place at last summer’s Paralympic Games in Rio.

Yule opened with 178kg in the men’s -80kg category, before clearing 185kg. With some timely and intelligent decision-making from Crosbie around entering the third attempt, he put rival coaches on the back foot and ensured that Yule had the opportunity to snatch silver. Unfortunately, he narrowly missed his attempt at 188kg but had already secured bronze.

The category was won by Jordan’s Abdelkareem Mohmmad Ahmad Khattab with a lift of 210kg; Syria’s Shadi Issa finished in the silver medal position with 188kg.

Also representing British Weight Lifting in Dubai and battling it out for Team Wales selection for next year’s Commonwealth Games are lifters Shaun Stocker, Nerys Pearce and Sean Gaffney.

Former serviceman Stocker was in competition on Tuesday (28 February) in the men’s -65kg category but unfortunately failed to clear a successful lift. Team mates Pearce and Gaffney are in action today (Thursday 02 March) in the women’s -73kg and men’s +107kg categories respectively.
